Intellisphere v3 alpha
New update of Intellisphere is out!
Here's what changed in Intellisphere v3,0 alpha:
- New terrain, with high detail textures and splatmaps.
- Lakes (and water shader in general).
- Improved sky, atmosphere and fog shader. Way more realistic than before, looks great on all altitudes and is quite performant.
- Improved physics: aircraft turns differently at different speeds and altitudes. Going into stratosphere changes handling a lot and reduces effective thrust. (Handling at 2000+ km/h is quite stiff and weird, will be fixed eventually)
- Improved target cycling: automatically selects the nearest target if you haven't selected any, and sort order is optimized for quicker target selection.
- Redesigned HUD, I hope you like it!
- Minimap.
- Improved AI: Should crash less into terrain and turn a little slower for easier dogfights.
- Improved missile profiles: AI now uses intentionally dumbed down missiles that are easier to dodge if you make a break maneuver. Missions are actually winnable now, way less hardcore. :)
- Slightly improved missile sounds.
Game is now built as a unified package (Windows + Linux). If you're a Linux user, you no longer have to use Wine to play it, and it's a single, unified package!
Builds also include debug symbols, and on Windows game will also create a console window where it prints quite a lot of errors on startup. These errors are a known issue in Godot 3.4 (Fixed in 4.0 alpha), since game now uses multiple threads to load the level.
It's been a challenging release, and I've been contemplating about making a Youtube video, explaining many technical aspects of making such a game. Realistic volumetric atmosphere and fog is a pretty great achievement that is on par with what's been presented in Godot 4.0 alpha, but implemented by myself in Godot 3.4, and it is super performant and GLES 3 compatible. A lot of corners were cut to achieve this, and that's what makes it interesting. Perhaps if you express your interest, I might make the video sooner.
Small taster of the plans for v4:
- Dialogue systems, and possibly a first real story mission!
- Various structures and 3D models to place on terrain for the missions.
- Pause menu, with ability to restart the mission and load various debug levels.
- Loading screen with progress indicators and potentially faster and multi-threaded level loading.
Let me know if you like where this game is heading, whether you like the physics or not, and what could be implemented/improved. Feedback is always welcome!
